John's Occasional Daily Diary
August 1, 2007
Back home from vacation and the trip was great! Boston and the White Mountains of New Hampshire were the perfect respite to prep for the release of Ocean Raton, all I need to get done prior, and the action that will hopefully ensue once we hit the streets.  More on that in a moment ...

When last we met, I shared my vision for what the book cover might look like: building, bra, and beach. Well, I received my initial proof from the publisher and let's just say my idea and their execution did not quite hit the mark. But that's the beauty of working with iUniverse - we're going back to the drawing board to take a fresh crack at the creative. I'll see new proofs by the end of this week, hopefully they hit a homerun, and we'll meet my goal to release by month's end (I'm guessing my official date of September is likely to be the reality).

For now, I've got Isabella's draft of the Ocean Raton cover (see right). At present, however, she and I cannot agree to terms on her illustration fee for publication (she will not budge off her demands for a horse and lifetime supply of WebKinz) so iUniverse has the gig.

As for tales from our New England adventure, it was a mix of relaxation, nature's wonders, tacky tourist treats and family affirmations. Won't bore you with a long dissertation, but the highlights are chronicled below.

  1. Grilled Meatloaf - discovered (try at kid-friendly Charley's on Newbury Street).
  2. Boston Duck Boat Tour - do it and buy the duck call whistle.
  3. Red Sox 11 ... White Sox 2 (taking the family to Fenway: priceless)
  4. Whales - watched.
  5. Shelburne Farms:  hold a chicken - touch a goat.
  6. Ben & Jerry's - at least in the freezer Willie Nelson and Stephen Colbert have found detente (see photographic evidence at right - watch the video backstory below)
  7. Appalachian Trail - hiked (how far is irrelevant).
  8. Wolfman - spotted, declared an "old goat," and directed to "scram."
  9. Romantic dinner - savored at Peyton's Place (thank you Happy & The Conch!).

That's our adventure - if you have any suggestions or recommendations for a New England jaunt, please feel free to post them to the Ocean Raton Message Board.  For instance, while Florida boasts the most tourist t-shirt traps per square mile, you can't walk a block in Boston without stumbling across an ice cream shop.  Which is the wicked best?  Coolest name?  Give us the inside scoop.

Okay, that bad pun signaled the end of this entry.  Type to you soon - email if you can't wait.
